Firm Overview
Founded in 1986, Summit Architects Inc. was renamed Summit Architects Collaborative in 2001 to reflect our unique team-building philosophy. What sets us apart as a mid-sized firm is the direct involvement of our principals with every client and our proven ability to work with highly regarded specialists — providing the flexibility to tackle virtually any project.
We offer comprehensive client services, beginning with intensive, broad-based research. Our openness to input from many sources and sensitivity to unique cultural attributes enable us to synthesize programs that reflect client and community needs and aspirations. Summit’s value-conscious approach to design includes proactive budgeting and continuous cost monitoring, as well as careful attention to key factors — from the compatibility of team members to energy conservation and building maintenance.
In keeping with our open, collaborative method, we deliberately avoid a “signature” style. While our training and practice reflect the great tradition of modern architecture, we strive for timeless design that sustains and celebrates human activity. Innovative application of new technologies streamlines our project management work and produces design solutions that anticipate future needs.
On large, complex projects we work in tandem with a hand-picked group of top consultants, from geo-technical engineers to specialty lighting consultants. Rather than relying solely on in-house personnel, we use our wide-ranging connections to select specialists best suited to a specific project. We also offer the option of hiring one of our expert in-house teams to work independently on construction management or interior design — or to serve as owner’s representative.
Summit Architects Collaborative has designed, managed and acted as owner’s representative on projects totaling more than $500 million. Our commitment to the built environment includes sensitive historical renovation as well as new construction. With a roster of projects and proposals in the Pacific Rim, we have a global outlook.
Fostering effective communications — from the client’s requirements to the architect’s vision to the coordination of multi-member consultant teams — is the goal of every project. Our collaborative working methods encourage diverse groups to reach consensus, expediting the design and construction process. By promoting close working relationships with government entities and community groups, we help to ensure that every project grows from a spirit of goodwill.
Architecture
At Summit Architects Collaborative, our work is client-driven, not ego-driven. While our design team is guided by the precepts of modern architecture, we don’t subscribe to a “signature style.” Our principals and executive staff, who closely oversee every project, are skilled at asking the right questions to ensure that building design is a direct outgrowth of client needs and aspirations. Summit’s value-conscious approach also includes a thorough grounding in the political and economic realities that shape design decisions in the twenty-first century.
Each building we design — new construction as well as historic renovation — reflects our belief in creating a strong sense of place. Fostering consensus among the communities affected by each project, we gain an intimate knowledge of local values and beliefs that enriches every detail of our designs. Summit’s designs are innovative solutions, tailored to highly specific site, budget and program requirements.
Institutional projects, such as cultural centers and higher education facilities, have always been central to our practice. We understand the many ways a college environment can influence the learning process, the quality of student life and local community relations. Equally longstanding is our commitment to sustainability and to future technology needs, enhancing individual productivity and well-being.
Summit’s unique, team-building philosophy means that every client benefits from a network of design and technical expertise far greater than any one firm can offer. When specialists are required — in engineering, landscape architecture, communications or other fields — we select the top talent best suited for the project. Working together with our clients, their communities and our consultants, we strive to create a meaningful architectural language and a strong sense of place that can sustain generations of human activity.
Project Management
Communication is the great challenge in complex projects involving numerous skilled teams, each focusing on a separate set of daily tasks, meetings, decisions and deadlines. Even in well-managed projects, the constraints of tight project schedules and budgets can spark tensions and disagreements. At Summit Architects Collaborative, our goal is to translate practical needs and budget realities into built projects that work. We are skilled at exploring the needs and values of all parties and finding the common threads that lead to consensus.
Summit’s experience in project management — our MBE-accredited team has administered more than one-half billion dollars in construction payments — has led us to develop innovative systems that turn potential problem areas into strengths.
Having managed as many as 32 consultants and 500 sub-firms on a single project, we’ve learned how to obtain maximum efficiency and attention to detail. One-point accountability for schedules and budgets establishes diligent oversight throughout the entire process, anticipating problems before they arise.
We offer specialized expertise in technology and sustainability issues. Hiring our project management team means tapping into state-of-the-art technology skills at no extra cost. Knowledgeable oversight and coordination of project teams is a key part of the package, involving continuous monitoring of all key factors — from scheduling to construction contract negotiation. Equally important is guidance in planning for an infrastructure that will economically accommodate future needs.
Summit also has more than 10 years of experience as an owner’s representative on complex projects, responsible for everything from site selection to operations programming. As practicing architects and project managers, we speak everyone’s language. We convey an owner’s often complex financial and functional requirements to the design team and, when appropriate, translate sophisticated design concepts into layman’s terms. The result? A collaboration that yields significant savings in time and money while avoiding misunderstandings.
